Physicist William Vermillion (1900-1968) was named the second president of the Rice Institute in 1946, and served as both President and a professor of physics. He greatly expanded graduate study and research throughout the Institute and established the residential college system. Houston made pioneering efforts in the fields of atomic spectroscopy and solid state theory.
